Irish DAILY STAR
It’s not every day you see climate change and systemic risk analysis get a positive mention in the redtops - but we are thrilled to see the Strategic Climate Risks Initiative (SCRI) featured in the Irish Daily Star.
In the wake of recent protests across Ireland the Daily Star highlighted our analysis - a world where our energy and food systems are no longer stable, and short-term subsidies are no longer enough to fix the problem.
As our Executive Director, Laurie Laybourn, shared in the piece:
"What we are seeing at the Whitegate refinery and on the streets of Dublin won’t be a one-off. We have entered a new era in which the systems that we rely on - like energy and food - are no longer stable. More conflict, competition, and climate shocks are coming. . These protests are the latest symptom of this unstable new world. "
"Offering short-term subsidies can help with the pain but they will only deal with the symptoms and not the causes. So, if that’s all that is done, situations like this will happen again and again. To become truly resilient, Ireland must stop being so dependent on oil and gas. That means an honest conversation about changing how energy and food needs are met and restoring nature’s ability to act as a shock absorber."
"Today’s energy crisis has to be met with investments that forestall an energy crisis tomorrow."
