Laurie Laybourn, executive director of the Strategic Climate Risks Initiative, was quoted in Politico’s report on growing scientific and governmental concern over a slowdown in the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). Laybourn explained that disruption would not wait for a full collapse: parts of the system could begin failing on the way there, with consequences felt decades before the AMOC itself grinds to a halt.
“Bits of the AMOC could begin collapsing on the journey to the full collapse. It’s a process that would have disruption along the way.”
